Programmatic pillar Settlement — Transformed territories

Smallholdings are a constant feature in a substantial part of the Campanhã Valley. Although nowadays almost exclusively the riverbanks and backyards of houses are occupied by urban gardens belonging to neighbors, we can, by looking to history, understand the dynamics of rural exploitation that coexisted with industry. The route along the banks of the Torto River, in the far east of the Campanhã Valley, invites the walker to explore, stimulating observation, attention, and internalization of one of the most unique areas of a landscape that combines the wild nature of the territory with its transformation, highlighting the marks of rural life practiced today by those who inhabit the territory and how its characteristics, its dynamics, but also its silences and pauses are incorporated as an integral part of a green and inclusive urbanity.

Intervenients

Nuno Moutinho

Nuno Moutinho is an environmentalist and craftsman, specializing in the production of brooms made from millet straw, with a strong connection to the land and rural traditions. In 1980 he participated in the first craft fair at the Ferreira Borges Market, beginning a self-taught career as an environmentalist, farmer, speaker, mediator, and teacher. Since 2001 he has worked independently, guided by pleasure and a direct relationship with his work and the land. His practice is based on observation and experience of the city of Porto, exploring the relationships between the urban and rural environments. In 2006 he published the book *Uma Herança Natural* (A Natural Heritage) and, in 2020, co-founded the association “A Soalheira – Associação Social de Cultura Ambiental” (A Soalheira – Social Association of Environmental Culture). He actively participates in community and cultural projects related to sustainability, agriculture, and the solidarity economy, notably at Quinta da Noeda and in Campanhã.

He dedicates himself to seed cultivation and the preservation of traditional practices, promoting initiatives such as the Soenga (a traditional Portuguese harvest festival), the grape harvest, and the singing of New Year's songs.

The guided walks organised as part of the Caminhos a Oriente project are intended as an exploration of Porto’s Eastern District, undertaken collectively through the act of walking.

During these walks, there will be an opportunity for a discussion halfway through the route, during which participants will be invited to share their impressions of the walk so far.
